Amazon S3 for storage of uploads?

I read somewhere that you can use Amazon S3 as file storage. I remember years ago my forum got full of images and it was a concern when hard drive on my server was getting full.

What are the pros and cons of using Amazon S3 to store my uploads, is it slower to access images? I'm not worried about the cost of the S3, more the performance when members view the forums.
