How to set up IPS search to search in a specific field?

Let's say I have a 'products' database set up, and this database has a field called 'serial_number'. I want to set up a serial number search using IPS's internal search mechanisms. I know the the search code is a module located under the 'core' application, but I still need to figure out how to utilize it.

Can anyone give me some pointers?
