Number field - how to format to use as money field

As a number field you cannot use non numeric characters such as , or .

How do I format the number field so I can enter 2.50 or 25.00 or 25,000.00 etc not worried about the £sign as I have put that in the display option

Or am I better using text box and let members sort it out
