Sidebar Advertisement blocks

Hello, is there a way to get sidebar advertisements to display if there isn't any other module placed in the sidebar position? 

I set ads to display in the sidebar and they will only show when i have a module (topics, posts, users online, etc), placed in the sidebar on a page.

As well, any way to get more than one sidebar advertisement to display at once?

The best thing I can figure is to make an empty custom block.

Thanks iacas.  Are you referring to using the block manager, then dragging the empty block over to the sidebar?  If so, how/where do I make an empty block?  Thanks for your help.
