How to sort out embedded media sizes?

The issue is essentially that if someone wants to include a video in their post, in the past they could use a BBCode tag. Now they hit the URL and it embed it. This wouldn't be so much an issue except it generates a giant video in the editor - which in my opinion is completely unnecessary and is also quite annoying.

We've been able to reduce the size that the video takes up and scale it to 500px width, but we've hit a similar issue with Soundcloud embedded media which takes up a huge amount of space and ultimately there is no need for it to take up so much space. Despite changing settings in the ACP, this has not resolved it.

Can I have some advice as to how best resolve this issue?
