Where should I start to change Recent Posts widget?

Hello,

After watching this thread and seeing there was no plugin being available to do it, I guess I need to put my hands on it.

However, as Recent Posts is a system widget, what should be the best approach to modify it? Or should I rather create a new plugin and mimic what the system widget does?

What changes do you want to make?  It is pretty easy to make changes with a plugin block in Pages.
