Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
NewToAllThis Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I host through IPS and when I complete my own backups through Cpanel, a copy of the backup is inserted in my root directory. Is it safe to assume I can delete this backup copy after I store it locally? My understanding is that IPS also backs up every site...but I don't think the copy I'm referring to in my root directory is their (IPS) backup copy. Thoughts?
Grumpy Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Yes, you can delete the one you created without any issues. And in an odd way, it's kind of not recommended to even use cpanel backup function other than for local download. Why you might ask? Because then the backup the host runs will include that backup in the backup. Backupception! And so the backup takes twice longer and twice the size without any gain in information. If you have like 10 backups, you got 11x size and time for no gain. It's also not a safety measure because if anything goes wrong with your live data, chances are, your backups will too since they're on the same disk. But it is convenient that you have a backup you can access directly without 3rd party help. But it is very inconvenient on how cpanel packs these things so taking out a single file takes ages. So, it kinda sucks. :P
