Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
.Peter Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Hi all! Until recently I've been working with close to 8 different shared hosting accounts because I kept needing more space and such.. I'm finally deciding to make the jump to either a VPS or a Dedicated and I don't know which... The goal with this server is to be able to host multiple IPB forums as well receive and send many curl requests a day. The VPS has 2 GB of RAM burstable to 8 GB and 80 GB of space and 1.5 TB / month bandwidth (upgradeable). The Dedicated server is a Dual Core 2.13 Ghz with only 2 GB RAM it has 2 X 300 GB Drives and 1 TB bandwidth (All upgradeable) can someone give me recommendations?
.Ian Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Personally I would go for dedicated. Sadly we are not allowed to discuss hosting here (goodness knows why) - so webhostingtalk.com might be your best place.
.Peter Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 I wasn't looking for actual who is better advice.. I just wanted to know statistically which would be better based on the info I provided. But thanks for the comment.

The choice of host also plays a role here. Take for example if your host is overselling. In this case, Your VPS might not perform as the specs indicate. I would first choose a reputable host and then discuss with them what I need :)

Hunting insects... Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 ah yeah I didn't take into account overselling. I recently changed host - and moved from one similarly specified VPS to another. The lift in performance has been quite dramatic. Unfortunately, the specs. do not tell the whole story and there's no easy way of telling good from bad until you are committed...
.Peter Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 So all-in-all a dedicated would be my best bet since I can be sure they won't oversell that lol?
RobertMidd Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Yes if you can afford it then go dedicated, I would.
AlexJ Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 So all-in-all a dedicated would be my best bet since I can be sure they won't oversell that lol? + You can run it the way you like. Now a days dedicated hosting is very cheap then it used to be before. You can get Xeon 32xx + 4GB RAM in 130$/month. Off shore hosting is much cheaper then actually having VPS and speed difference due to location is negligible compare to cost difference.
Volvospeed Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Decent hosting for a server that can handle 3-4 medium sized boards is still 250-300 a month. Add another 50 to that if you want litespeed and cpanel or anything else like that. Still not bad though. The pros of 3-4 VPS is that it is 100% redundant if they are in different data centers and its better for SEO if you link between them.
Gary. Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Decent hosting for a server that can handle 3-4 medium sized boards is still 250-300 a month. Add another 50 to that if you want litespeed and cpanel i7-920 - 12GB DDR3, 2x 1.5GB sata 15K, Unlimited bandwith ( Off shore ) for half that or upgrade to a 1GB port, And pay 10USD more, And as for the cPanel licence, Your not going to be selling hosting via automatic signup, So turn the box into a VPS, And then you save 25USD per month on the licence :P As for the overselling, That is true and it can cause issues, But if your struggling for cash or do not have the full experience to run a dedicated box, Go for a managed VPS but make sure you choose XEN so you can be sure you get what they offer !
Volvospeed Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I can buy a hooker in Peru also for 10 dollars. Doesn't mean thats what I want. With a lot of SERPs becoming speed based you need to look hard at some of the off shore hosts. Yes, you can run strangeloop, CDN, whatever to make up for it, but thats the slippery slope to over spending again.
.Peter Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Yeah.. I looked at a few offshore... I didn't really trust them much... went with an onshore dedicated server.
