Have you just started a new board and want to transfer members from the old one? Do the people on your mailing list all want to join your forum? Do you regularly need to sign up lots of students at your school or staff at your company as members on the board? Then if you have their usernames and emails and can produce some passwords, you can put the information in a CSV file and use this tool to import them.

If you can open your data in a program like Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc then you can save to "members.csv" from there. Each line should be on the format "username, email, password". (Comma as delimiter, no quotes and one entry per row).

Upon successful installation you can access this tool on the components tab of the Admin Control Panel. Decide from there which user group the new members should be added to. Choose whether email from administrators or other members should be accepted by default for all members. Set the timezone that you think would fit most of the imported members.

Before new members are inserted into the database, both username, email and password are checked for errors using the exact same set of rules used during regular IPB registration. Entries with email addresses that already exist in the database will be turned down, usernames containing illegal characters will be rejected and so on.

You can test your CSV file in advance through a preview feature that will check if the username, email and password of each entry will be accepted. Nothing will be inserted, but the results will be presented in detail in a logfile that will be created. When you decide to run the import tool itself, there will also be generated a logfile so that you can check if anyone were rejected and for what reason.

If you only keep one file for people that should have access to your board, then you can run the import tool for that file repeatedly. No one will be inserted twice.
