Jumping to first unread post

Seems there should be an easy answer for this, but I can't find it. Is there a setting or other way to go to the first unread post? When I scroll it will show me a line at the last read post. Other forums I use have that ability to jump to see the new post in the topic/thread. What am I missing here?

Some other points to consider: 

1. You can click on the big dot / star in front of the topic. That will take you to the first unread.  

This requires some (unintuitive) training to your users.  

2. There's a plugin where any clicks to the topic titles will take you to the first unread.  This is what I use in my community.

I thought this was built in. One of my forums is set to behave this way and I am not using any plugins.
