custom fields in profiles and secondary groups

Greetings. I am not exactly sure where to put this, so apologies in advance if I'm in the wrong section.

I currently have a drop-down selector box with a bunch of states listed (Australia) and want to know if there is an automatic way (without going via subscriptions) to link a particular selection to a state secondary group.

As an example, if a member lives in Queensland (QLD) and selects this option from the drop-down box, I'd like for them to be added to the QLD group as a secondary option.

Is this at all possible, or am I living in a fantasy world?
