Send me news and information variable

I opened a support issue, but they said it was out of the scope of what they support, so I'll post here. 

I need to do some bounced email cleanup. I figured setting "Send me news and information" to no for each user with a bad email would be sufficient. Looking at core_members, I assumed "allow_admin_mails" would be the answer. However, switching "Send me news and information" on and off appears to do nothing to the value of that column. Where is "Send me news and information" in the database? Any help is much appreciated.
