Installing a second Forum from earlier Backup

I want to restore an earlier database backup from 6 years ago to recover and copy some now deleted posts.

This will be temporary and It wont be public. 

I want to install it either in a new forum directory on original domain hosting,

www.originaldomain.com/forums2  

Or under a new domain name which is an add on domain under my shared hosting plan.

www.newdomain.com/forums.

Can this be done, if so how and which is the best way to do it?

You would need the files of the DB version you're trying to restore. For example, if you're trying to restore a IPB 3.2 board, you'd need files from a 3.2 branch of IPB.

All you'd need to do is configure the IPB database credentials for the version you're restoring.

Thanks are you saying that you need to restore the files from the forum version at the time of the SQL backup?

Not the exact files that you ran, but from a package of the same version as your database.
