Archiving downloads

In my community users can post downloads which only useful for very specific software versions. Once this software is updated the download often becomes useless, only in rare occasions the download can be updated to work for the newest version.

The problem I am facing now is that there are loads of outdated downloads in the downloads section, resulting in a mess of working or outdated downloads. This causes unnecessary confusion. I've thought about deleting the outdated resources manually, but this would result in the submitter losing all 'reputation' he or she gained from posting the download.

Does anyone know if there's a way to add some 'archiving' support to the downloads section?
