Validating Custom Fields

I have a custom field that is a game name (alias) this name is unique similar to a login name. What I would like to specify in the custom field that contains this variable is a validation routine that is called with the member data and the field, I can then do whatever checking I want, if all is well I simply return true, if there is an error I return a string with some helpful text.
