Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Ditchmonkey Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 We are getting all these announcements about product "improvements" and still no mention of a tags system. Tags have been asked for numerous times by many members and really should be a standard feature in a modern piece of software like this. Are we going to get tags in the next 6 months?
Morrigan Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Bleh. I personally hate tags with an undying passion. I find them tedious and oftentimes pointless because it makes a forum experience more difficult on an average user. Tags, if applied, should be dynamic but I do not support them being a part at all. They may have been asked for but I think it has equally the same base ask for it not to be a part.
Amy T Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Bleh. I personally hate tags with an undying passion. I like tags as I like them for navigation but I do hate light boxes with a passion, omgness they are so annoying.
Amy T Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Oh and I remember a post by a staff that said that a tag system will be added to a future version of ipb. I am hopping one does get added but with the ability to turn it on and off.

They may have been asked for but I think it has equally the same base ask for it not to be a part. Well then turn them off. For many of us tags have a very valuable application that is outside of the forum experience. When I migrated from Vbulletin I was told that tags are planned. Because of that I paid extra to have my vbulletin tags imported into a custom field in the database in anticipation of an upcoming tags system. Well over a year later we have not even heard of the plan for tags much less had them implemented.
Ditchmonkey Posted September 28, 2010 Author Posted September 28, 2010 Bleh. I personally hate tags with an undying passion. That's a pretty extreme reaction. I'm thinking you do not understand the value of a tagging system that integrates the various IPB software apps - forum, gallery, content etc.
Amy T Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 I was also told tagging system was planned as I had requested it. Although at the time I was requesting it for ip.content and then they stated it was planned for ip.board.

Although at the time I was requesting it for ip.content and then they stated it was planned for ip.board. A tagging system that didn't tie content together between the various apps would be pretty pointless.
Amy T Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Ya that is why I think they said it was for the ip.board and not just for the IP.content.
DawPi Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 These tas: http://forum.invisionize.pl/files/file/331-pav31-tags-system-100/ ?
Ditchmonkey Posted September 28, 2010 Author Posted September 28, 2010 These tas: http://forum.invisionize.pl/files/file/331-pav31-tags-system-100/ ? Is there an English version?
Amy T Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Hopefully there is an English version of that.
DawPi Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 We're working on English version.. Will be released on my board soon. :)
Mark Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Well then turn them off. Tags are still planned. We talked about tags a lot for 3.1. It's one of those things where anyone could knock it together, but a lot of implementations employed by other softwares aren't all that useful (as some people in this thread). It's something we intend to revisit for 3.2. In the meantime, if anyone out there is wanting tags, perhaps you could share what you're trying to accomplish, what problem you believe would be solved by tags. Real world feedback about your community is much more interesting and helpful than "we want this, when will it be done?" :)
Amy T Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 One of the key advantages to a tag system is navigation, how ever the tag system needs a page that lists all tags used on the site. For my site I use tags to help people find things, like my anime database. I can tag anime with the genres and other related terms to help people find that anime or others like it. In a way it is like an advanced search tool to help finding topics and content easier. I will admit several years ago I thought tagging systems were just for seo until my host pointed out they can be used as advanced navigation systems with so many more features then using categories and trying to put articles in several categories to make it easy to find. Most systems only allow you to put things in one category like forums only allow you to put topics in one category but with tags you can put them in several, making them easier to find. The host was pointing this out do to having the support section using tags instead of catagories and I do say it made finding help with support questions easier.
Ditchmonkey Posted September 29, 2010 Author Posted September 29, 2010 I want images, threads, and ip.content records to all be integrate through common tags. So if the tag "Toyota Tacoma" is clicked, a results page shows images, threads, and content records that match that tag.
rastaX Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 What he said. ^^^^^^^^ As I set my board up, I realize there are many disparate sections of the site that need to be tied together. For me this is the Articles, Links, Videos and of course the Forums. It could just as easily be Blogs, Gallery or anything else. My subject matter threads through all these areas, but is not really organized that well. It kinda becomes a matter of organizing with lots of categories and subcategories which means a lot of drill down to get to the final destination or a little looser setup that may be easier to browse but harder to find things. I am a firm believer in redundant navigation. The closer a navigation point is, the better.. I figured if you are never more than a quick click away from where you want to go, you will spend more time on the site. A tag system should allow anyone to organize and navigate the site the way they want. In effect allow a user to focus in specifically on what they want from the site. Tags should allow anyone looking for a specific bit of information to bring together in one place all things related from every corner of the site just by clicking on a tag. It also allows us to cross reference easily. We have moved from the discussion business into the information business. We need to be able to put tailored information at the users fingertips more quickly and easily than our competitors.
Amy T Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I agree with restax, as I mentioned the key thing with tags is better and faster navigation.
Management Matt Posted September 29, 2010 Management Posted September 29, 2010 There are certain technical difficulties with grabbing "all" data due to each application's complex permission handling. You would need to literally pick through each tag in the DB and compare whether or not you have permission to see any matches it may bring. This would be an incredibly 'expensive' operation without relying on MySQL views and/or Sphinx.

Once again thwarted by reality............ :P Any alternative method of tying all site content to a single search mechanism?
bfarber Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Any alternative method of tying all site content to a single search mechanism? Well, we could ignore permissions.... Everyone seems to frown on that idea though...
Amy T Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I know one cms that has their tag system set up to use the search tool on the site. You click on a tag and it literally does a search on the site for that so it does find all content that has that word, even if it is not tagged with it. Basically it is if you just typed that word into the search instead of clicking on a tag.
Amy T Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Well, we could ignore permissions.... Everyone seems to frown on that idea though... I have an idea. When you click on a tag it shows you the content tagged with the tags in the section you are in and has tabs that you can click on that are for the other sections. So say you clicked on a tag for tiger and are in the forums it would show you all topics tagged with tiger and also have tabs for the other sections /apps. So you could click on gallery and it would then show you all the gallery images tagged with tiger.
Ditchmonkey Posted September 29, 2010 Author Posted September 29, 2010 I give up. My vbulletin forum had tags. My Expression Engine websites have tags. It looks like my IPS website will not have tags for this reason or that. :white flag:
Amy T Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I want tags as well so we are in the same boat sort of speak. Oh and I do not just want tags I need tags. Although what would be even better is having several tag systems, specially for my anime database, it would save me so much time.
