Dark Minds Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I went to install a fresh copy of the new IP.Boards (I also have IP.Gallery and Blog) 3.1.x, and during that installation it states this:Memory Limit: 128M or better recommended Your memory limit: 64M. Please contact your host and request the memory limit be raised to 128M. Uh-oh. Hmm! Contacted my hosting provider and they informed me that my only solution is to move over to one of their VPS solutions. I cannot justify paying an additional $30-50 just to resolve a memory limitation issue. So, can anyone recommend a viable solution? Does anyone know of a web hosting provider that offers 128(+) Memory Limits? (I shouldn't have to say this, but just to be clear I am not talking about Bandwidth/Storage capabilities here!) Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.
Guest Digital-Photography-Forums Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 HostGator ASmallOrange There's two.
Dark Minds Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 HostGator ASmallOrange There's two. Hostgator limits shared hosting plans to 64MB (that's who I'm with now) . Their tech's solution was switching over to their VPS level 3 plan. Meh. I'll investigate your other recommendation though. Ty for the feedback!
m4ss4 Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I know it's not the best solution, but try to find another host. You have to tell them first, that you need 128mb. I beleive you will find one. Try to search a smaller host, not a big one. No other way to solve this.

I'd like to think/hope that with so many IP users out there combined w/ the professionalism/quality of the IP products, that many have already found a viable solution to the 3.1.x IP.Board recommended requirements for Mem usage. But, I have been roaming the net now for about 2-3 hrs trying to find a solution and so far ....still searching :/
Enkidu Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 You can temporary increase your memory limit to 128MB just to run the upgrader and then return it back to its original value. For that you need to contact your host and ask for permission to do so. if they agree (and why shouldn't they?) you can simply create a php.ini file, put inside it the following line: memory_limit = 128M and then upload it to your admin dir :)
Guest Digital-Photography-Forums Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Odd, I've used HostGator in the past with IPB 3.x and 3.1 and never had any issues. But they do oversell their servers so it's possible they cut back on resources for users :-\ If that doesn't work, whats wrong with using IPS hosting: http://www.invisionpower.com/hosting/website.php

My concern was based on when I see "recommended memory requirement" ....I think, "is this telling me I'm going to have performance issues AFTER the installation?" Hence why I started off into that direction. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what IP Services is suggesting here?
Biker.GA Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 128M is the new default for the latest version of PHP. There's nothing that states that you MUST use that setting. If your site is working fine at 64M, then there's nothing to worry about. Up until we updated to 3.1.1, I had it set to 32M and things were working just fine. The message you saw was just an informational message. You don't have to set it to 128M unless you're running into memory issues.
Abomination Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 You don't have to set it to 128M unless you're running into memory issues. What would the admin would see if there were problems?
Biker.GA Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 You'd start seeing mysql errors complaining about not enough memory.
Abomination Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I appreciate the help. :) You'd start seeing mysql errors complaining about not enough memory. Such as the emails the admin gets from MySQL that have errors such as "too many connections" or "mysql has gone away"? Or does the user see something? I should probably just adjust the memory down to a low value and experiment...
Biker.GA Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 The errors you mention usually have nothing to do with memory. Memory specific errors usually are along the line of: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 61865984) (tried to allocate 3582805 bytes) in........ mysql has gone away happens every now and then and is usually nothing to worry about. Too many connections can indicate other settings that need to be bumped up, but would need to see the exact error message to determine where.

Of course you should worry about mysql has gone away, it usually means mysql timeout is set too low and while executing mysql command, mysql drops connection because of timeout.
Biker.GA Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 IF it's happening on a regular basis, then yes, one should investigate. However, once in a blue moon, naw. Not really necessary.
Abomination Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 61865984) (tried to allocate 3582805 bytes) in........ Thanks, it would be something the users would see, and of course instantly contact me about. Understood about the server gone away & too many connections errors, I was in a hurry and those were the only 2 that I could think of that arrived via email, instead of being shown on the users screen.
marklcfc Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 I was told mine was only set as 32MB when upgrading, but its been handling high traffic (400 users/30 minutes) well. Is there any need for me to change?

Now, 99% of hosts has this option enabled in there apache build - But then again if you see an memory error - Its not all your fault - Basicly means - If they allowed 64MB and you do get the forum error, Your current host does not have that available which is a bad sign.
Draycon Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I just installed IPBoard 3.1.1 with 64M (thats all my provider wants to give). The board runs pretty, but I am not able to import another language pack. Thats bad because I want to run the board in german language. Any idea how to solve this?? Did I just buy a licence and cannot use it?
