Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Morrigan Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Now please don't laugh, I know this functionality is possible as another forum software incorporates it (not advertising just stating I know they can, no it's not vB), but a way, using XML (if I remember correctly that's what they use) to insert code into the source files instead of manually editing the files, it's a search/replace or search and add above/below certain text entries in source codes. One thing it does, is if it can't find it or properly enter the information it tells you that it can't and that a manual insertion will be needed. I think this would be helpful because I know a lot of IPB admins may not be code savvy and it would also eliminate a lot of "How do I install this mod" problems. Worse case scenario the UMI will have to incorporate it but I just thought it would be better to be more IPB integrated especially with the new hooks system.
AndyF Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 There is this > http://resources.invisionpower.com/index.p...p;showfile=1417 Although the plug / hook system should reduce the number of edits needed :)
Alex Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Worse case scenario the UMI will have to incorporate it but I just thought it would be better to be more IPB integrated especially with the new hooks system. I don't think Michael was planning on continuing the UMI :)
Michael Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I don't think Michael was planning on continuing the UMI :) Correct, it doesn't sound like there's a need for it anymore.
TestingSomething Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 What does 3.0 do that would eliminate the need? I have not read every detail of the blogs, so I may have overlooked some things, but wouldn't there still be a use for a cantralized system of creating tables, adding setting groups, editing the lang files, and all the other thigns your system does? Maybe I just missed some details they released, but I ahdn't noticed anything which would make it easier for most modifications to be installed. And by the way you did a great job with it as far as I can tell.

TestingSomething Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Ah, ok thanks. I read part of that before, but I wasn't thinking when I read it apparently because now just that first part of the entry makes sense. I never understood what hooks and plugins even were. But it sounds very nice now that I read it! Making mods from here on out will be much easier. Now if only the converting would be easy. lol edit: eh actually I guess it helps more for the people installing the mods more than writing of them, as the mod author still will have to do the same amount of work really.
Morrigan Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Yeah, SMF has this.Yup, I said this simply becauses according to the hooks system it will not eliminate needing to do file edits but will significantly reduce it.
Jaggi Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 the only problem with this that once you've applied one or two mods and made a few file edits this system would stop working as it would stop finding the matches. Then on top of that you need to give all your files r/w permissions which can be a problem. And the fact any decent text editor does this and with my larger mod i include diff files which means they can do this type of search replacing/adding but with more control. I also prefer to apply mods manually as i know what code i'm putting into my forum.
Morrigan Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 This method doesn't stop you, and on the other software I've installed many mods without error, it's only when it searches for already changed code that it will not do the file modification and would tell you in advance that it can't find it and you will have to manually do the edit.
Michael Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Ideally, with the hooks system in IPB 3.0 and what we can do in skin templates, this won't be necessary.
