Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Tribe No 1 Fan Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 You guys know how in shoutboxes, new messages appear without refreshing the page, etc. What if that were the case in actual topics? Like, you could be in a thread using the fast reply, and while you're in the middle of typing out your post, if someone else was posting at the same time, you would see his message automatically show up before you would find out after making your post.
Amy T Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Although this sounds like a good idea I think it might be hard to do but would need ajax of some kind.
X3773 Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 If that add this they could add Ajax fast posting as well.
Master_Odin Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I think this would be a waste of resources to be honest. I've never seen a thread so active that users were just refreshing their page until a new reply was posted. Generally users go out and look at other topics if they're "waiting" for a response in a particular topic. That's what a forum is all about.
Amy T Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I agree if this was put in it might just like shoutbox's cause High cpu loads and may cause your site to get suspended on a shared host.
Amy T Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 What's an ajax??Ajax (asynchronous JavaScript and XML), or AJAX, is a group of interrelated web development techniques used for creating interactive web applications or rich Internet applications. With Ajax, web applications can retrieve data from the server asynchronously in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page.[1] Data is retrieved using the XMLHttpRequest object or through the use of Remote Scripting in browsers that do not support it. Despite the name, the use of JavaScript, XML, or its asynchronous use is not required.[2][3]
