Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
TheMac Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Hello! I think that the best feature is to integrate with the iPhone or iPod Touch. For example, for Joomla: http://www.bravenewcode.com/wptouch/ Take a look... or a custom skin for the iPhone with the iPhone screen dimensions. And autodetect the iPhone and put this theme... The example of Joomla: Posts on the front page [*] Drop down menu navigation [*] Single post page [*] Post meta data and navigation [*] Comment box [*] Links with favicon support [*] Archives page with tag cloud [*] Sample post with images [*] Built-in 'e-mail post' capability [*] [*]
Mat Barrie Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Disagree completely with any iPhone specific anything, but now that I think about it, it could be kind of handy to configure the skin that appears based on the user agent (so you could make one skin the default for iPhones, one skin the default for Windows Mobile, and one skin the default for Lynx)
Jυra Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Wouldn't IPS have to adapt it every time there's a new version?
joelle Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 I would love to see Iphone / Ipod Touch support from IPB. Gadgets becoming more & more important and software developers should consider it.
henke37 Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 According to a recent post by rikki, I am going to guess that it's going to be in 3.X.
Alex Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Rikki said there would be a mobile skin, not an iPhone skin, there's a huge difference there. A mobile skin would still, I assume, be pretty basic because not every phone is capable of display webpages like the iPhone is. As for what the topic opener said, I doubt they would produce an actual iPhone application, but ya never know.
OpenWare Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Wouldn't IPS have to adapt it every time there's a new version? Not really, and you can somewhat do it using IPB 2 anyway, so its probably not much harder to modify IPB 2.3 to expand on the existing system to add more flexibility. In 2.3, you can set all bots to use a particular skin, if you add the iPhone and WinMo user agents to the list of bots.. then anyone using a mobile device will automatically get the PDA/Mobile Skin you choose to use.
Frigidman Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 Actually, in v2.3.x, you can change one line of code and re-use the "Skin Remapping" option in the Admin CP./sources/ipsclass.php line#2250 Change: if ( stristr( $this->query_string_real, $data['map_url'] ) ) To: if ( stristr( $this->user_agent, $data['map_url'] ) ) Then in the admin tool for skin remapping, add two remap definitions of: "ipod" and "iphone", and set them both to an iphone/touch specific skin, and you now have skin on demand. I tested it with my ipod touch, and it works fine. Of course if you do any sort of url remapping to skins, that won't work unless you also add the query_string_real in the check, and do a lil more code changing. But, for the purpose of what someone asked about... the above works with very little effort.
TheMac Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 Stats show how insignificant it is... Oh! You use Windows.. is beautiful! jajaja
W13 Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Oh! You use Windows.. is beautiful! jajaja  Yeah, and so does the rest of the world. Don't wanna get into a "Why Windows is the best despite whatever has been force-fed to you by Linux enthusiasts" discussion.
gel Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 100% agree on this. I would like to have an iPhone gadget. iPhone can view IPB perfectly already though.
Jaggi Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 i'm not a iphone fan but just a feature that should be possible with iphones is using the same way the mobile skin will work is to simple use the agent id sent by the phone brower ( which will direct users to the mobile skin) and have direct to a iphone skin.
Kat Wyld Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Could care less about iPhone, to be honest, but I'd LOVE to have a 'mobile skin'.... I can view my forum beautifully in lo-fi mode, but you can't post in that mode at all (at least not that I've found!), so it makes it pointless....
TheMac Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Yeah, and so does the rest of the world. Don't wanna get into a "Why Windows is the best despite whatever has been force-fed to you by Linux enthusiasts" discussion. I hate Linux, Windows, I never mind. :D
zigs Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Why? my forum works perfectly on my iPhone the only thing that doesn't work is the games in the arcade due to iPhone npt supporting Flash.
Mark Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I agree with zigs. The point of having such a good web browser in the iPhone is so we don't need something like this.
Frigidman Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Stats show how insignificant it is... *** Yeah, taken from a site only intended for windos users... How significant is it for a website actually dealing with useful information to those who matter? Very much so:

Jaggi Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 iphone uses the safari browser so lets not look at site stats but official browser stats, remember these include pc/mac stats too. http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
Mat Barrie Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 iphone uses the safari browser so lets not look at site stats but official browser stats, remember these include pc/mac stats too. http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp Anytime anyone links to W3Schools as a source for information, I want to clobber them.W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers. These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.
Jaggi Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 yes but they're an average stats which is more accurate than a sites individual stats. Of course no stats are 100% accurate.Anytime anyone links to W3Schools as a source for information, I want to clobber them. lol you can try ;)
Guest Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 yes but they're an average stats which is more accurate than a sites individual stats. Of course no stats are 100% accurate. The stats on that page are just the w3schools.com stats, not the web, or even multiple sites, so they are an individual site's stats. They're also from a very technical site, so they're bound to be somewhat biased.
