Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
//Nathan Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 OK, I know this falls under the "no discussing IPS products" rule, but I think IPS is making a mistake with 2.2 and I'd like to, real quick, see if others agree it's a mistake. Sorry, staff. When MySpace did it - logging you off when you left the site, making it impossible to stay logged in - and you had to reenter your username and password - it was bad enough, but MySpace had the clout to do it. Everyone's using it so they can get away with pulling crap like that.IPB doing the same thing will kill or otherwise adversely affect new communities if the users are annoyed they have to log in every time. You've always had that option up there "Rememeber Me". If people are worried about security (such as cookies) they uncheck it. If they're on their home computer that they use every day and they want to stay logged in, they click it.I think it's a step backward. You might as well disable cookies if you're going to force the user to log in every time.I suggest giving the end user a choice, and leaving it disabled by default. Perhaps you could have a login security page in the ACP where the admin can choose a default of nothing, a "Step One" of how 2.2 handles it - logging you off like it does here - and a "Step Two" of disabling cookies altogether.
Keven Fox Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I voted no, but I don't have to log in here it saves my cookie. Or did you mean on your own ACP?
michael n Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 If you did mean the ACP I would vote "yes"... Otherwise (if you meant the forum) I would vote "no"
Starnox Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 For security reasons I can see why they did it, so I don't mind it for the ACP. As for accessing the forums, it wouldn't bother me if someone hi-jacked my account to be honest, so no.
Keven Fox Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Yeah I like it for the ACP and you can turn the extra log in off if you want.
Jason L Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 This is better suited topic in IPB 2.2 Feedback section.
.KX Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 What are you talking about? IPB does login you in automatically...it does for me anyway.
Management Matt Posted September 27, 2006 Management Posted September 27, 2006 I think Nathan is confused :DThere was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.
amr.salah@live.com Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Mate can u plz add ajax quick login and registeration
bfarber Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Mate can u plz add ajax quick login and registeration I honestly could not see the point of either. :rolleyes:When you login, it needs to change half the screen depending on your permissions....so basically ajax would have to load the entire page anyways. No point in using it. Same with registration...
Keven Fox Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I honestly could not see the point of either. :rolleyes:When you login, it needs to change half the screen depending on your permissions....so basically ajax would have to load the entire page anyways. //Nathan Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 No, I don't mean the ACP. I've never had access to 2.2's ACP, haven't been a customer since January.Sorry JasonIPS, I mainly stick to Community General Chat and Community Technical Chat.Yeah, Matt, I might be confused... but I did read a post from someone on Staff who said that now if you come back with a different IP, it logs you out, or something like that. They said customers could disable the feature on their own IPB installation but it was staying, here. Since most people (even the broadband users) have dynamic IP, it just seemed like a dumb idea, not at all something I'd expect out of the IPB team.I was logged in when I came onto the board, so I guess that's a result of Matt's fixes mentioned above.
Millar Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 I would find it really annoying having to log in every time a I visit a forum.
Will L. Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 I think Nathan is confused :DThere was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.I find this odd as I have to login after so many hours on this main forums stilland yes I have emptied all caches, cookies and stuff
Keven Fox Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Oh, so another dial-up issue right? Most dial-up companies have dynamic ips which is why that's happening?
TCWT Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 How come I have to login every time I switch computers? I marked "remember me" :o
Will L. Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I have cable aka comcast and I have to login every time
FrostedPopTart Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 This mainly only happens to me on non-IE browsers on this site. On IE it works for the most part. :D
Quillz Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I think Nathan is confused :D There was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.I thought the new "stronghold" cookie was causing the auto logout. What does this cookie do, then?
TCWT Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 This mainly only happens to me on non-IE browsers on this site. On IE it works for the most part. :DYeah, I'm using FireFox. So, this is indeed a "bug"
Will L. Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I thought the new "stronghold" cookie was causing the auto logout. What does this cookie do, then?more of a security featureand this just shows IPS is commited to making IPB more secure which I love it more secure the better
Quillz Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 more of a security featureand this just shows IPS is commited to making IPB more secure which I love it more secure the betterYeah, that's great and all... but what specifically does it do?
Mat Barrie Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Yeah, that's great and all... but what specifically does it do?The 2.2 announcement describes it in excruciatingly boring detail. Though it likely is exciting to the security folks, as a developer it's not all that to me ;)
sully Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 There was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.I still have to login after x amount of hours. I thought it would stop after you patched the board, but it didnt..
Cooltad Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 How come I have to login every time I switch computers? I marked "remember me" :oYou need to enter your rfid in the IPS ManTrack component.
