Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted September 27, 200618 yr OK, I know this falls under the "no discussing IPS products" rule, but I think IPS is making a mistake with 2.2 and I'd like to, real quick, see if others agree it's a mistake. Sorry, staff. When MySpace did it - logging you off when you left the site, making it impossible to stay logged in - and you had to reenter your username and password - it was bad enough, but MySpace had the clout to do it. Everyone's using it so they can get away with pulling crap like that.IPB doing the same thing will kill or otherwise adversely affect new communities if the users are annoyed they have to log in every time. You've always had that option up there "Rememeber Me". If people are worried about security (such as cookies) they uncheck it. If they're on their home computer that they use every day and they want to stay logged in, they click it.I think it's a step backward. You might as well disable cookies if you're going to force the user to log in every time.I suggest giving the end user a choice, and leaving it disabled by default. Perhaps you could have a login security page in the ACP where the admin can choose a default of nothing, a "Step One" of how 2.2 handles it - logging you off like it does here - and a "Step Two" of disabling cookies altogether.
September 27, 200618 yr I voted no, but I don't have to log in here it saves my cookie. Or did you mean on your own ACP?
September 27, 200618 yr If you did mean the ACP I would vote "yes"... Otherwise (if you meant the forum) I would vote "no"
September 27, 200618 yr For security reasons I can see why they did it, so I don't mind it for the ACP. As for accessing the forums, it wouldn't bother me if someone hi-jacked my account to be honest, so no.
September 27, 200618 yr Yeah I like it for the ACP and you can turn the extra log in off if you want.
September 27, 200618 yr What are you talking about? IPB does login you in automatically...it does for me anyway.
September 27, 200618 yr Management I think Nathan is confused :DThere was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.
September 27, 200618 yr Mate can u plz add ajax quick login and registeration I honestly could not see the point of either. :rolleyes:When you login, it needs to change half the screen depending on your permissions....so basically ajax would have to load the entire page anyways. No point in using it. Same with registration...

No point in using it. Same with registration...Agreed, I ask for alot of things in ajax but you're right, this just wouldn't work. Worthless.
September 28, 200618 yr No, I don't mean the ACP. I've never had access to 2.2's ACP, haven't been a customer since January.Sorry JasonIPS, I mainly stick to Community General Chat and Community Technical Chat.Yeah, Matt, I might be confused... but I did read a post from someone on Staff who said that now if you come back with a different IP, it logs you out, or something like that. They said customers could disable the feature on their own IPB installation but it was staying, here. Since most people (even the broadband users) have dynamic IP, it just seemed like a dumb idea, not at all something I'd expect out of the IPB team.I was logged in when I came onto the board, so I guess that's a result of Matt's fixes mentioned above.
September 28, 200618 yr I would find it really annoying having to log in every time a I visit a forum.
September 28, 200618 yr I think Nathan is confused :DThere was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.I find this odd as I have to login after so many hours on this main forums stilland yes I have emptied all caches, cookies and stuff
September 28, 200618 yr Oh, so another dial-up issue right? Most dial-up companies have dynamic ips which is why that's happening?
September 29, 200618 yr How come I have to login every time I switch computers? I marked "remember me" :o
September 29, 200618 yr This mainly only happens to me on non-IE browsers on this site. On IE it works for the most part. :D

September 29, 200618 yr This mainly only happens to me on non-IE browsers on this site. On IE it works for the most part. :DYeah, I'm using FireFox. So, this is indeed a "bug"
September 29, 200618 yr I thought the new "stronghold" cookie was causing the auto logout. What does this cookie do, then?more of a security featureand this just shows IPS is commited to making IPB more secure which I love it more secure the better
September 29, 200618 yr more of a security featureand this just shows IPS is commited to making IPB more secure which I love it more secure the betterYeah, that's great and all... but what specifically does it do?
September 29, 200618 yr Yeah, that's great and all... but what specifically does it do?The 2.2 announcement describes it in excruciatingly boring detail. Though it likely is exciting to the security folks, as a developer it's not all that to me ;)
September 29, 200618 yr There was a bug that meant you couldn't stay logged in for more than a few hours which has been fixed in PB 2. I updated this forum with the fixes yesterday.I still have to login after x amount of hours. I thought it would stop after you patched the board, but it didnt..
September 29, 200618 yr How come I have to login every time I switch computers? I marked "remember me" :oYou need to enter your rfid in the IPS ManTrack component.
