My users are trained to check new content or activity searches, which makes this sort of thing redundant, unless its carried through to the search results.

It is configurable in the ACP under Community -> Forums -> Settings -> Topic Settings -> Popular Now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he means how to display the Popular tags in the Activity Stream or search results?
