Yes, you can have private conversations.

Just click on a profile name in the chat and start a private chat conversation with the person.

Thanks, I tested this on my test site and now I see that it is a one on one private chat, I didn't see any way to invite someone else into a private group chat

That's correct, the private chat feature only allows one person to directly chat with one other person.

Not the answer I was hoping for but one I understand and appreciate, thanks all!

On the 4.1.x Chat I have tested the Private Chat feature and there doesn't appear to be any notification to the person you have initiated a private chat with. I had to go back into regular chat and have him ALSO initiate a private chat with e. This is not how it worked in 3.4. Am I missing something or is this the expected behavior?
