How can I upgrade my theme without losing my edits?

I've added to and changed so much in my theme. My custom.css is hundreds of lines and I've got tens and tens of edits in the templates themselves. How can I maintain these edits while I update the theme? I heard something about an edits system that tells you what was changed or something- how can I use this?

Afraid no easy way for template edits ...

If template are not altered for the templates you have made edits to then you should have no problems ... if they are then means making note of your changes then revert the template(s) and re-add your edits.

You can find out what changes have been made via the Theme Differences tool

As long as your css changes are added to custom.css file (or similar file within the custom area) and no changes made to the actual IPB css files then again should be ok unless IPS change or remove some css in future versions (again the Theme Differences tool will tell you what changes)

Also, you could make a copy of all of your changes in a txt file. That way you not only have a set of instructions to go off -- and since they are written by yourself they are likely to work well for you -- but you also have a back-up of your changes. It has helped me by giving me a hands-on method for learning how to write and read templates, which makes theme work much easier.

I can testify to this. On our site Simon went from an hour to updating the theme to like... 5 minutes. Having your own system for updating makes things a lot simpler too.

Just wanted to add my agreement to Simon's post. I run a forum where the members want a stripped down theme that they can use whilst they are at work. This has meant having to edit template code to physically take out the calls to show avatars and the preview-on-hover feature. I've had to keep a note of the code and what files I've edited so that if I need to upgrade the theme I can do.
