Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
JayX Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 The IPS site is still concentrated on IP.Content, which I presume has now changed into Pages? Is there a resource to understand what it can do for my site, examples of it in use (I've seen the typography.guru one and the UK Police one, which both look solid) and what kind of things can be built? I'm keen on expanding my site beyond a forums, and this seems to be the best way to do it... but I'm concerned I'll purchase something that isn't what I'm expecting. Shots of it action (esp from an admin/contribute POV) would be great!
xtech Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 You can do virtually anything, if you are able to code html/css/php...
opentype Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 The IPS site is still concentrated on IP.Content, which I presume has now changed into Pages? Yes, but it is just a name change. The functionality is pretty much the same, so if you look at pages done with IP.Content you also see what is possible with Pages.
TracyIsland Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Yes, but it is just a name change. The functionality is pretty much the same, so if you look at pages done with IP.Content you also see what is possible with Pages. That is not an accurate statement. There is one functionality that is currently missing from Pages that was included in IP.Content. That is the ability to embed IP.Content Blocks on an external web site. That functionality is a planned feature that will be introduced in the future. If you read that Feature Plan, it shows what is 'Next Up' and what is 'Coming Soon.' The planned introduction is number 10 on the list. That could mean in 3 months or it could mean in 9 months or it could mean 15 months. For those of us who actively use the embedding of IP.Content blocks in external websites, it is a showstopper, plain and simple.
opentype Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 That is not an accurate statement. Your reply, that my statement was not accurate, is not accurate. ;-)I said “pretty much the same” for a reason. Some features where added, some are removed for now or for good. But the topic started did not ask about such specifics, but is obviously interested what the app can do in general. And in that regard, IP.Content and Pages are pretty much the same.
TracyIsland Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Your reply, that my statement was not accurate, is not accurate. ;-) Unfortunately, your statement that my statement was not accurate is inaccurate. One could say it is semantics but if you review the exact wording of the original post, the member referenced the phrase "what kind of things can be built." If the member was led to believe they could embed blocks on external websites when they currently cannot, the correct or more accurate reply would be to say that the embedding feature is not currently available.
opentype Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 If you think it is useful to add additional information (like which specific features are currently not available) feel free to do that. But you don’t need to suggest that something in my posts is not correct, when that isn’t really the case. My statement isn’t incorrect just because it possible to add additional information.
TracyIsland Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Oh but I do need to not only suggest but simply state that your statement, as worded, is incorrect. It is pure and simple, semantics. You made a statement that incorrectly reflected the features of Pages.
opentype Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 That discussion is going around in circles … … that your statement, as worded, is incorrect. It is not. I said PRETTY MUCH the same. Do you get the difference between “the same” and “pretty much the same”? Do you get that there is a difference? The core functionality of IP.Content/Pages is to create pages and to collect and output arbitrary data as IP.Content/Pages databases. Nothing has fundamentally changed in that regard and that is what I said and I stand by it. I didn’t say “every feature that was ever available in IP.Content will be available in Pages”. So stop suggesting that I said something like that and stop “correcting” something that wasn’t wrong in the first place.

JayX Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 The site I'm working on would be self contained, so don't worry - the exporting of various blocks into other sites wouldn't really be anything I currently think I have a use for. Thanks for clarifying the differences, and that IP.Pages and IP.Content are in fact pretty similar. I had a demo version of Content and sadly didn't get much chance to play around with it, but it looks a pretty good toolset of authoring pages and articles, and providing my user base an easy way of commenting/rating etc. That's pretty much what I'm looking for to expand into. Look at the help documentation on what there also look at example websites on the forums there is a listing of sites already done in IP.Content that are pretty good looking.I'll definitely give that a whirl, hopefully I'll see a good range of the really excellent designers, and then what people who are capable of scripting PHP/HTML/CSS but aren't professionals (i.e. the level I'm at!) are able to do too. I leave my Forum looking stock most of the time, but am keen to be able to transfer skills across for the first time. Thanks!

Thanks!IP.Pages is probably the most interesting application out of the entire suite, and really ought to be a default purchase for pretty much everyone (so open your wallet). Once you understand its capabilities, you see that IP.Pages is an all-encompassing management system for multiple things: Page builderTemplate builderArticle management systemDatabase management systemCustom menu builderWidget builder to be used in the hot zones and sidebarAs you can tell, if you're going to use IP.Pages for articles and article management, that's just a sliver of what IP.Pages can do overall. Its real power lies in its framework for helping you build a cohesive website around your forums, blogs, galleries, or downloads - and that sounds like your true goal. I can tell you hands-down that the new IP.Pages is lightyears better than IP.Content, with drag-and-drop simplicity of blocks onto "hot zones" and the sidebar.

That a new one for me and the first I heard of this. What are "hot zones" is that what IPB is calling a function or feature?
