Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted June 26, 201311 yr I'd really like to suggest the changes to the way YouTube videos are handled gets reversed. I understand that there was no way to post links to YouTube videos before but on my forum nobody has ever wanted to do that, they all just want to embed a video as simply as possible. Trying to explain the reasoning behind this change when it goes against the way its always worked, when nobody wants it, and when the result vary from browser to browser is difficult to say the least. Reverting back to the old method would i'm sure suit by far the majority of forum members.
June 26, 201311 yr half want it one way, half want it the other way. and no matter what (as far as I know) if user clicks the share button under the video and copies that link it always works.
June 26, 201311 yr There's a setting for automatically parsing media URL's that lets you chose which way you want. Am I missing the issue? Was this changed in 3.4.5?
June 27, 201311 yr This is what I mean Ah. I see. So something did change. I've yet to upgrade to 3.4.5, but bfarber included a file edit to restore the old functionality at least. If this could be implemented as a hook it would be even better. I can understand why it is the way it, but my personal opinion is also if people don't want links to automatically parse as YouTube embeds they should disable the setting to auto-parse media links. (Or perhaps this setting should be disabled by default instead). Regardless, see the file edit here. (Thanks for including that also bfarber)

This will not be an issue in 4.0 with the way the editor has been redesigned.
June 28, 201311 yr so can we currently embed video into our forums? I just installed my forums, and I am really having some troubles getting things to work, changing things like icons for the each of the forums, as well as embeding youtube videos... I have used the media bbcode but still can't get any videos to embed or even show up, other than a link. Links are not what I want. Ami I missing something easy?
June 28, 201311 yr Random video, sorry Yes, you can embed youtube videos. If the URL when you paste it into the editor is linked (i.e. colored blue like a link) you have to select it and choose to unlink it before you submit the post.
August 9, 201311 yr Thanks for the links to the changes to revert this. The change was bad IMHO - I can understand the inability to easily post the link, but then when somebody posts a YouTube link for example, I want it showing on my forum and not taking the user elsewhere. Once the user goes away then they are less likely to respond to the thread. I hope in 4 that these things will still auto embed. Sadly I find very few people know how to use any of the buttons on the posting box and certainly would not understand the media box (even if they found it) - all they want to do is to post a YouTube video as they have been doing for a long time. Users are simple things! They type and can copy and paste. Beyond that, they get confused LOL - unlinking a youtube link would be impossible as they would not have a clue how to do it. I think as admins we forget that users want life as simple as possible.
January 13, 201411 yr I am using 3.4.5 and not getting the video to show up, even when following the instructions. Is there another way, or am I doing something wrong?
