Hello ! smile.gif

I'm going to change server and I wonder if IPB works well on 64 bits server or if it's better to use a 32 bits server... Can you tell me about it ?

Thank you ! smile.gif

On a 64 bits server IPB works very well! ;)

OK. I will use a 64 bits server then. :)

But I was also wondering if IPB was optimized for 64 bits servers and could benefit from these servers' advantages (I'm sorry, I don't know much about all this) or if it will just be as good as on a 32 bits server... What is it that will make a différence, and where will we see the difference ?

Thank you ! :)

Any optimizations for 64-bit would have to be done by PHP and MySQL. There's no way for IPB's code to be optimized for 64-bit servers because PHP is an interpreted language, not compiled.

That said, 64-bit servers have optimizations in most areas, so IPB would almost certainly run faster (though the difference would probably be negligible).

Are there really people still setting up 32-bit servers on the internet with less than 3GB of memory?

Yeah, most dedicated server companies.

IPB will work on any server as long as it has a Web Serving program (Apache, Litespeed, Lighty, IIS), PHP and MySQL/MSSQL installed. They can run on 64 bit systems which allow for more memory (RAM) to be used by the server.

As mentioned however, since IPB is programmed in PHP, it cannot itself be optimised for either 64bit or 32bit systems, however, PHP could.

The system doesnt matter at all.... I run my forum on a Debian 64Bit Server. Peak times: 90.000 user online. Simply amazing since Apache is using all my ram than (16GB). And of a 1GB connection maybe 10Mbits are left ^^
