I put the board offline, then converted the database using the tool. I had to edit the config file via ftp and all was well. Then I hit the button to run the tasks and they seem to be zipping along. We are down to around 400 tasks now, and nothing looks complicated. Thank you for the prompt help so I could get this sorted. (95K leatherworkers thank you, too.)

Your database is currently configured to use single-byte UTF-8 Encoding. Some non-common symbols (such as historical scripts, music symbols and Emoji) require 4-Byte UTF-8 Encoding. If you want users to be able to post these symbols, your database needs to be converted. I guess I need to run the converter?

I did an update a month ago, and probably because my forum is 700G the background tasks are running slowly and piling up. I don't know how to write or run chron tasks. What happens if I click the "Run manually" button that says "These processes are performed in the background in batches and may take a long time to complete. They will complete faster if you set up a cron to run tasks. Alternatively, you can manually run them now and wait until they all complete.' Will the board go offline? Will the database blow up? I need reassurance before I click that button. I'm on version 4.7.20 The search function is not working, and I suspect it's because indexing needs to happen. Thank you.

Good points. I am following all the recommendations of the ACP this time. I should have done my updates in a timely manner too. I’ve had red bars screaming at me every day in the ACP for over a year. Lesson learned. Love the upgrades and improved features. I may toss the third party adserver. Thanks

So I need to make a working forum, hook it to a clean copy of the database and let the ACP convert the database files. I’m better off deleting 18 years of files on this server I don’t need and starting fresh, I guess. Keep the uploads folder. I noticed all kinds of strange directions in the config file- that must have been what the hacker was doing. I would turn this over to Invision but I sell ads on this site. How do I make the upgrade the database to be compatible with the new software? The host is making me an sql.gz file of the database for safekeeping. At this point I’d like to do a clean install and drop the database in, if possible. The customizations are not important. Thank you for your suggestions and help.

I agree there seems to be a hack. I was hoping a clean install would fix it, but the old database is not compatible with the new software, apparently. I am in over my head. Thank you so much for trying to help me. I’m just distraught at losing 18 years of an active forum.

When I ran the tool you shared it said the PhP memory is too low, and must be 128M or higher. I am fixing that now. Have I broken my board permanently?

I tried to reupload the new files but that didn’t change anything. There are a lot of old files from previous versions of the board that i did not delete. There are no recent errors in the server logs. The database is 678G so I just renamed the old uploads file then switched with the new one that was generated. I can’t do an upgrade or check without the admin CP which is only partially there. The upgrade never completed.

I used the upgrade tool and determined I needed to upgrade the PhP. Then afterwards I ran the tool again and everything seemed fine. In the middle of the upgrade the screen froze, then faded. I wasn’t able to get back into the ACP so I attempted to reinstall new software files. Now I can access a partial ACP but I have the error I noted above, and the board doesn’t work, of course.
