In the advanced configuration in the settings, and in the data storage tab.

I'm not sure if I should leave it on file system or choose MySQL database?

Because could this cause the database to swell significantly for hundreds of members?

Because too big a database is not desirable either.

If your host offers it, choose Redis.

I would ask yourself why you are looking to change the setting at all?

To optimize the forum as best as possible or can it wait until it grows?

And I'm also curious how all this works.

File system is fine till you find you need otherwise. Many communities will never outgrow the need for file system.
