Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
Cirrus Soft Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Is it possible to have 2 domains using and running the same script of IPS? The only difference might be a logo change (if possible) depending on the incoming domain.
bfarber Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 The license does not permit you to use the software in this manner. If you purchased two licenses (just for arguments sake) there might be a way to do this, but it's not recommended or supported.
Cirrus Soft Posted July 10, 2017 Author Posted July 10, 2017 Thanks for the response. If we need a second license to accomplish then we will. Can you explain why it is not recommended or supported? and what does that mean? If we move forward with this will you still support the site (just not the dual domain)? or does it invalidate support all together? Can you give some direction on how we would make this happen? Does it require a knowledgeable developer or can you explain briefly the process we would have to do?
bfarber Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 You are likely going to run into various issues that will not be supported. We would support the site unless any issues arose stemming from the customization specifically, which we of course could not assist with. You can get the software to switch the domain name used by using logic in conf_global.php. The problem is, no pre-display parsing is performed and all content is stored fully formatted, so links in topics will use the domain name they were posted from, rather than the name the user is visiting from. You may be able to create a hook that runs on output to address this. You would also need to take into account RSS exports and API requests, if you use those features. Most clients just set up two separate installations in the end.
teraßyte Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 Nvm, for some reason bfarber's reply above didn't appear until I submitted mine. Odd
BomAle Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 You can use a -TESTINSTALL suffix (for testing/upgrade/development scope) but you can't set accessible this installation. Your IPS Community Suite license allows you to have one live installation (your actual community) and one test installation. We also allow an unlimited number of installations on "localhost" domains so you can test locally without restriction. If you are installing on a test install, enter your license key with -TESTINSTALL on the end. If you are installing on localhost (it must be "localhost" specifically, not "127.0.0.1" or any other alias), this will not count towards either of your installations, however, if you are installing on any other domain, it will count as your test installation. You can use IPS Connect to share members among them, but plugin app and others data are not shared.
