The Old Man Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Hi, I have searched and checked here but found nothing about this... Please could you advise what is the recommended dimensions/size of the background image for the header of IPS 4.1.x, please? I'm hoping to invite some of my talented artistic members to create some background header images for one of my communities, and would like to give them some clear guidance before they start. I like way Twitter for example has a recommended size of 1500x500 and resizes according to fit the viewport. https://support.twitter.com/articles/127871 Thank you!
The Old Man Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 Polite bump, please! What's the current thinking on background image dimensions for the header? Should you cater for much larger displays and Retina so photo backgrounds still look good on them or stay with a 1920px wide image?
jair101 Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 I think there is no universal answer to this question. I am in the same situation as you and I am going with 1920x290.
opentype Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Agreed. There can’t be a specific number. Displays might be able to show thousands of pixels as horizontal measurement, but your file size might get huge because of that. Between 1500 and 2000 seems reasonable at the moment for “pictures”. For vector images/text with sharp edges you might go higher. More important than the actual size is to pick the right file format (GIF/JPG/PNG) and compression setting while creating this file to make the file size as small as possible.
