Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I am looking to display a single article in pages. From what I can understand, all I seem to be able to display on a page is the categories within database, or a feed of multiple articles, however I'm having trouble in creating a page and then displaying a single article contained in the database. How would I go about this?
opentype Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 If its just a single article, I would probably just copy & paste the HTML from the article into a widget or custom block. Other than that, you can only call the article as feed, as you already know. You could narrow it down, so only one specific article shows.
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 Problem is, by just copy and pasting the code, it woukd not display any comments made to the post. See the way I have it set up is that when an article is made, it posts that article to a forum also and uses any comments made either under the article or forum post are one and the same. So either accessing the original article or forum post promotes discussion. The issue is displaying the article on its own rather than it only being accessible via one of the feeds.
opentype Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I am not sure you are asking for e special functionality or you just want the default functionality and haven’t figured out how to use it yet. The normal way to display Pages database content is to drag the Database widget onto a page. There isn’t anything else you need to do. That creates a category view (if you have categories), a listing view (for records in a category) AND the record view to show every single record with comments by itself. Are you this far already? Is this what you were asking about or did you want something else?
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 It's the record view I don't seem to be able to find and work out. When I have had a look in my page editor side bar (where you drag and drop), all I can fathom is catagory view (look like a forum) and listing view which I think looks more like a blog? So I'm going wrong somewhere I feel with the basic functionality.
opentype Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I see. Like I said: Drag the Database widget on the page. Everything is in there. It’s all delivered through that one widget on one page.
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 When I get home, I will have a good play about with it. At current i am using the default articles database and apparently there are a good number if display options that are configurable when setting up a database. Will report back later, thanks very much for your help appreciate it.
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 @opentype thanks for our your recent help, however I am still struggling with this. It seems that no matter how I try, I can only seem to have items display in a list (with multiple records) either like a blog or forum listing. I know this is a long shot, but would it be at all possible for you to provide a kind of walk through to see where I am going wrong with this? Best wishes Chris.

Now the only thing you need to do is click the link of any of these records in the listing view. Then you get the single article. Quote I know this is a long shot, but would it be at all possible for you to provide a kind of walk through to see where I am going wrong with this? Check out IPS’ Help Guides section. They explain Pages databases and have a tutorial.
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 That's the thing, where you have to click a link to view the article that's not what I would like. The database is named 'reviews' Lets say I have an article called 'best sat navs' and a page named Sat Navs that I would like in the menu. If I create a page and use the database option it can only do either a forum view or blog type view. Which take all items from the database and displays the as a list ot what not. What im looking to do is create a page called 'Sat Navs'. Add an article to the Reviews database and select only that article to display (no forum type view or blog view beforehand) the only workaround I can think of, is for an article to have its own database with only that record in it and then display it as a blog, but that seems very wasteful. Hopfully that makes a little more sense chris

If it’s a database, it’s a database and holds multiple records. Why do you want a database which only shows one record? If you want to LINK a specific record from anywhere (like the menu), you can do that of course. You still end up within the database, in a specific category.
Joel R Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I agree with @opentype. You need to make the built-in IP.Pages database work the way you want. You add a database to a page. You're welcome to change the template of the database, category listing, and the record view but you do not add a single record to its own page. The record is contained within the database. However, you ought to be able to link to the single record, which is ultimately what you want. In fact, you might be able to set up a Friendly URL to that particular record so your menu can have a nice link structure.
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 Friendly URL seems to be the best way to link it to a menu item going forward and creating a static page. The thinking was to get a page in a way that you would when you use the WYSIWYG block and simply add the text in there, with the benefit of it being posted to the forum and comments being merged. If I used the WYSIWYG editor however, I don't get that benefit if you get me.
Kurisu87 Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 @opentype Just had a look at your pages extension.... it looks perfect for what I am looking for, for my index page! So I will be picking up that shortly!

Yeah, the better approach is to utilize the database to control permissions, viewing, filtering and commenting abilities and perhaps create a unique FURL for major articles. Yeah the Superposed and Supergrid by @opentype are great. I use them as well. There's also an articles style by @TAMAN too.
Kurisu87 Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 @TAMAN do you (or anybody) have a link to your app page? As I'm using my phone, it won't let me click through to your market place submissions on your profile.
Kurisu87 Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 @TAMAN I purchased this also this morning. 'A Different Article Styles' going to have a play with both and see which one suites me best
