Nityananda Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 OK Guys. I am having the occasional problem with my hosting and I am comtemplating a switch to another dedicated box (although I only just got on this one :( ) .. So, the questions are simple really. Which is the fastest to use linux with mysql or windows server with mssql? If the answer is mssql or not much difference, then what would I have to do in order to move my forum to a dedicated windows server rather than my dedicated linux box?
AlexJ Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Doesn't you have to pay extra to run forums on windows box? MSSQL Driver - 75$ Enables your community to run on the MSSQL database system Please note the MSSQL driver is only compatible with MSSQL 2005 and above.
Nityananda Posted October 4, 2010 Author Posted October 4, 2010 yeah cost isnt an issue ... just wanna know which is likely to be faster which is why I originally posted in tech support
AlexJ Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 I assume both would be same because 95% users use Linux Box? IPB wouldn't be selling there product which run slow for 95% users :P
Nityananda Posted October 5, 2010 Author Posted October 5, 2010 I would also assume the would both be the same, or sql server would be slower .... But would be nice to get an official answer to it, and the question of what would be entailed in me converting t mssql if I decided to do so from a member of staff ... Especially since I used the support forum to ask the question and the topic was moved without so much as a comment on the matter.
.Peter Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 From my understanding MySQL does run a little more efficient than MSSQL resulting in possibly faster query times. Although if I were you I'd stick to MySQL as many mods and hooks would be incompatible with an MSSQL setup unless you don't run any or plan to run any.
Nityananda Posted October 6, 2010 Author Posted October 6, 2010 Thanks Peter. Thats def answered my question on whether or not to move :)
.Peter Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 :D Any time Although one thing if you have a large database you can switch to the Sphinx searching system... could help out a little.
