IP.Chat Concern

Hi Peeps,
First of all can I say that IP.Chat is a fantastic product. However I do have one concern. As I have a family oriented forum we tend to have the ruling of "If there are children in the room, bloody behave", and personally I would like to keep that on my forum. The problem is with IP.Chat is that it shows the last X messages when you enter a room and as far as I can see there is no way of switching this off. Basically meaning people can be saying things that are inappropriate and a younger person could enter the room seeing everything that others have just been saying.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have the abilty to control this (unless I'm being dence and its already there) or can it be switched off until we can. I'm doubtfull that I will be the only person who does not want messages showing from before a user entered.

I'd say to change the rule to bloody behaving anyway because a child could enter at any time. One could enter right at the moment someone is pressing enter on something and that child will be exposed to it. If they want to say something inappropriate then they should say it in private to one another.

The ruling in that respect is that it is up to the parent to ensure they want their child entering and is highly specified as such.

Besides this, the fact remains that it should be an option. Even without the reasoning above, I know myself I have been talking and shut myself up quickly because x person has entered. I dont want the chatroom to become a place where people are carefull what they say. On my forum the policy is quite clear. The forum areas are clean, and people behave. The chatroom is generally where people let their hair down at night. Dont get me wrong we have a very very small amount of children that visit the chatroom and even then it is generally during the day, however I would still like to have the option to stop this happening.

Wasn't saying that it shouldn't be an option. Just that a kid could enter at any moment, right as someone is saying something that they would want a kid to see anyways. As an alternative, you could always use another chat, where it's a 'free for all', and just restrict access to that. That way, people can get as raunchy as they want without fear of a kid popping in, while keeping the chat clean. :)

I'm actually working on something and being able to limit access is something that I need to add. I'm hoping to have something released within the week.

Its not so much raunch chat .. hell I make sure there are not logged onto the site for that (besides other websites are so much more fun LOL) .. Its more simple things like swearing etc

I was more using the word "raunchy" for amusement than being literal. :)

I may be wrong about this, but I think the Chat honours word blacklisting. So why don't you just create a bad words list to blacklist certain swearing?

Kinda like a balancing act really. I dont like to have censoring as the majority (99.9%) are adults and should know better and the children will just get told off like ... well .. children LOL

You won't be able to easily hack this in at present, unless you understand javascript very well. If you do, the code is all in public/js/ips.chat.js. You'd effectively need to discard any downloaded messages with the last message id is "0", but be sure to update the last message id with the message ids you are discarding so that on subsequent calls it knows to start showing those messages.
