Gender

Okay.

So on one of the forums i go on, which uses IPB Board, the Gender option only has three choices:
Male
Female
Not Telling

I politely asked for them to add another option "Other" for people who are transgender, bigender or genderqueer. I have been told there is a modification for it.

They did not take my suggestion respectfully and members have told me it is useless and no need for it. When all i wanted was an "Other" option.

An alternative to my suggestion was to just change "Gender" to "Sex". And that would be so much easier. Members did not realise that Sex is based on your body parts, and gender is much different.
I have still been refused.

So i have come here to suggest it and hopefully for it to be changed widely across all IPB Boards.

My two suggestions are:

1. Add an "Other" option to the gender drop down.
2. Change Gender to Sex, instead.

This is a simple suggestion which would make everybody in the Transgender/Bigender/Genderqueer etc. much happier and thankful, and i will continue to enjoy the features of IPBoard if it is done.

I just read the gender article on wikipedia and I must say I can see a point in changing the word 'gender' to 'sex' (altough my members would probably ask for a 'yes, please' option)

When gender becomes sex I don't see the point in an 'other' option

By bigender to do you mean intersexed AKA hermaphrodite.
I think must transgenders would probably put what gender they are mentally. Like if they are Male to female they would more likely then not want to put female as the gender.

Yes, the alternative to the other option was to change it to sex, and that would be fine.

Transgenders would be fine with that yes. But Genderqueers are in the Other option. Bigender is not a hermophrodite.

I have never heard of bigender then.
I have heard of intersexed people though people that are born with both reproductive organs - although must have only partial development of both organs not the full thing.
Not sure if I have heard of genderqueers either. It sounds like a rude thing to call some one.

While you are correct, gender and sex are different, I think it would be a bad idea to change the word "gender" to "sex" because of the fact that parental controls etc may block webpages featuring the word "sex".

Most people are not aware of the difference between the words sex and gender, but I am certain that the meaning implied is sex, for which you can be only one or the other. So I think you should just think of it as saying sex, as that is the meaning.

If you want to change it on your own board, you can easily do so in the language files.

Yep basically making it so you can customize it, which would be cool.
Then if some one wants to they can add transgender, transsexual, intersexed/ hermaphidite, and any of the rest mentioned above.

At this point I'm surprised not EVERY profile field is custom. Ship IPB with the standard profile fields as custom fields, allowing the admin to finely tune it themselves. Same with registration fields.

Like they're doing the bbcodes with IPB3.

Almost all the profile fields are now 'custom' fields. Location, AIM, MSN, etc are all in the custom profile fields section.
