Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
bfarber Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Lets face it, IPB2.3 slower then 2.1http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=277437 No matter how many people here saying the opposite, I checked it with more then 20 people on my test board. If everyone else is telling you the opposite thing, is it not possible it's something unique to your site?
Michael Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 So using macros for images will magically make everything faster? How, exactly?
Cool Surfer Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 So using macros for images will magically make everything faster? How, exactly? He might not be a programmer/modder, but its ok if he has put forward his point / observation. Someone could also have said - so how exactly does not using macros magically make everything faster? Hopefully someone might be able to proove what he feels.
Cool Surfer Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I am sure if there are more heavy wrappers to load and more sql queries in newer versions, when compared with invision older free versions, then it would certainly be slow. The only compansation is now we have faster net connections and faster servers with more ram, and faster PC's. So overall net effect would be same ...
bfarber Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Just for the record, I think the OP was making two separate suggestions guys. I don't think the macros were related to speed - it was a separate suggestion combined into one topic.
Michael Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Ok, so they are separate issues, I still don't get the macros suggestion. In my mind, macros are just one more thing that has to be loaded on every page, and then not necessaily used, I'd prefer to just code the HTML of the images directly into the templates.

To be honest I've seen some macros used in an amazing context. TWOP (televisionwithoutpity.com) uses them heavily, and it probably makes their life 1000x easier. The idea is great. It's just a pain for us modders is all. ;) Basically, say you have the same HTML (for instance, an image tag) in 100 places in the skin. That's fine and all, and it's easier to put it directly in the HTML. But then say a skinner comes along and says, well, you know, I'd really like to add a class to this one particular image so that's positioned up 1 pixel. Sounds easy enough, until you find you have to edit that image in 100 places in the skin (just finding all the places is ample enough challenge). With a macro, you edit it once and it's changed everywhere. As an analogy, it's the same concept as OOP and proper class design. You edit something once and it's changed everywhere. :)
Management Matt Posted October 3, 2008 Management Posted October 3, 2008 Will IP.Board 3.0.0 be faster than IP.Board 2.3 out of the box? That's a tough one to answer. IP.Board 3.0.0 is programatically better, more efficiently coded and easily more extensible. But as for raw speed; I wouldn't say that it will be. Too many factors influence raw speed. As nice as it would be to click something and have it appear instantly, it's not really going to happen with software as large as a forum.
