Allow users to open the menu, choose a category, and then hide it to keep the interface uncluttered. In pinned mode, the menu should remain visible while navigating

Allow users to toggle the menu between expanded and collapsed modes as needed

If this is something that was considered at some point, I’d absolutely be in favor of it.

Just for hypothetical funsies, do you any thoughts on how submenus would work in this layout?

For subcategories in the menu categories, could implement a feature where clicking on a specific menu item within a category opens a window displaying the subcategories, provided that subcategories exist for that category.

This is entirely an off handed observation, but there's a certain exquisite irony in theme design. 

The positioning of the community menu to the sidebar is to take advantage of larger resolution and wider screens.  Here we are with massive, curved screens with extra large resolution and bigger monitors yet at the same time we also need our communities to appear on handheld smartphones.  

I'm waiting for the day that we can navigate our communities (or at least new notifications) on my smartwatch! 

I love that. That would definitely be a welcome change/addition.
