I use the IC5 em production server and test server:

https://community.lightningmu.net

I confess that I'm a bit discouraged.
Although the version is good, many things that were announced in the videos cannot be seen.
And this has left me quite discouraged, by the way, the presentation teases are inviting, I paid for the license renewal, eager to see the new features.
I know that it has not yet been defined who will be able to use them or not, but considering it is a new product, it is more than obvious that we (Self-hosted) will not have the features.
Not even in the testing stage, I believe that in the testing stage all the features should be available.
For example:

  • Signed topics
  • Live community features
  • Summaries

The current version looks like a more limited version of IC4 with a new UI.
I'm sorry if this offends the developers, it is not my intention but it is what I am feeling and it is so frustrating.

Another very important point: to developers, I understand your intention to renew the text editor. I truly understand everything that is behind the development of IC5, as I am also a developer and I know how much work such features can be.

However, I think you have limited the text editor too much.

We can no longer build:

  • Tables
  • Define custom titles with specific classes, such as class badges
  • Basic HTML tags or content
  • Colors edit
  • Title type edit
  • and much more

These are simple things, but they make a huge difference for those who manage gaming communities.

I talked to some people and many of them do not want to update or do not intend to make this migration, not even when the final product is released, due to the way we conduct projects/communities at IC4!

What I mean is that some things cannot be missing from this editor. I believe you need to think strategically, remembering that you work with software (CMS) that encompasses a variety of different niches and segmentations, and that for each of these segmentations there is a different way of presenting our content.

Example basic on IC4 for badges:

<span class="ipsBadge ipsBadge_large ipsBadge_style2">TITLE HERE</span>

It's such a small thing but it makes a huge difference.
I feel like my content is all exactly the same.
Is this perhaps the behavior you want from now on?

On our side we have updated our Community (self hosted) from version 4.7.18 to version 5 Beta 3.0.0
I played too much with the alpha versions, I was too hyped by the announcements in recent months, I already saw all the power that this new vision brings as they say so well.

For me there is much more contribution than restriction. Ok the editor no longer offers to insert html code (although it is already subject to internal discussions I think), ok it has a different approach for the formatting of the contents, but it is sticky at the top when you scroll through the pages and that puts an end to all the tears. I'm kidding. Nevertheless, it is a small thing that changes everything.

The blocks are almost all easily configurable with grid, wallpaper, carousel, list presentations, ... it is a godsend for us.

The new configuration of the menu on mobile, of the side panel on PC, no there are quite a few nice and good things.

On the other hand, it's been a long time since I drew a line on the hope of having features that make a big difference like the lives (for a football supporter site, even a gaming one, it would be used to the highest point during the lives/matches/...)

Knowing who is present live or who is typing text, it's not a crazy thing either, we can do without it without worries.

But yes we can only be disappointed and worried as indicated here:
https://invisioncommunity.com/forums/topic/480408-ic5-last-version-for-self-hosters-what’s-next-for-self-hosted-users/

Anyway, after playing a lot with the alpha, beta 1 and beta 2 versions, I felt that beta 3 would hold up against our community and we launched. It allows @Esther E.  to have a good Monday morning 😬

@SoloInter

I reply you on another post !

I'm not saying the product is bad or anything like that.

I'm just giving my point of view as a customer, I really appreciate how the community and its employees work.

But some things need to be said!

All the new widgets, UI and other features of IC5 are fantastic.

However, what made me come back here and accept a new licensing term even though I have a community that doesn't generate any profits for me other than expenses, were the new features.

Topic subscription is something that every community needs, I mentioned this in another topic, but considering the whole situation built for cloud services, it's enough for me to have my answer.

On the other hand, some suggestions for improvements need to be mentioned and one of them is related to the text editor, to some essential changes in the CMS after all, isn't that the idea of the tracker?

Listen to all customers?

Whether it's cloud or self-hosted

If not, when will this be possible?

One more question, if I start a test in 5 can I move into production?

Excited with 5, can't wait!

You could if you wanted to do so. However we cannot encourage a beta to be used on a production site, and you may well wait for fixes or even have to revert at times.

Sorry to hear you a discouraged. Of course we will never please everyone, all of the time. Its worth noting live community features are available on 4 also, but not on a self hosted environment. Quite simply, they require cloud functionality to work.

This has already been done.

We have said we are looking to bring tables at some point. Other items have been discussed at length already, but in short, the editor is more functional for most people. The items you mention there, are, for the most part, items that should only really available to advanced users. As a developer yourself, you could actually add your own applications for items such as these if you wanted to do so.

Conversely, we have also talked to many customers, who cannot wait for version 5. In fact, we have actively had to encourage some not to upgrade their sites too early, as its still in beta. As mentioned above, we will not please 100% of people, 100% of the time. As you have already seen straight after your response, not everyone agreed with your sentiments there.

Yes, HTML is indeed not possible to add within the editor. I would however encourage you to explore other ways of working, and ask if similar things can be achieved in a different manner. Using your example there. What exactly are you using that code for there?

For add a specific style on title example here:

Could contain: Chart, Plot, Text, Computer Hardware, Electronics, Hardware

You would need to be more specific. What style?

I ask as you should not allow your users to be using html anyway. We have never advised that, and its a security risk to your site to do so. Anything outside of that, may or may not be achievable in other ways. What I'm trying to do here is see if what you are trying to do is possible. That may well be "No, that is no longer possible", however wouldn't you like to know?

EDIT: As a developer, you may find the following handy too

Yes, I remember that when HTML posts were allowed, there was a warning in IC4 that said something about security.
And yes I understand this.

However, it was possible to enable or disable it for a specific type of group. I never enabled it for members. It was only available to us, Administrators and/or developers.

To answer your question, no, it is not possible to do this with the current editor.

However, the maximum styling I have for titles is the size and a color.

For dark sites, badges were a superior style option to traditional styles, so it was easier to use them to give greater visibility to certain important texts.

So, here is one example. Issues like this are one of the reasons not to use html at all. In version 4, you would indeed have to use html to either

  • Give it a color that would stand out on both a dark and light theme

  • Or apply some CSS that changes dependant on the theme being used

Version 5 is intentionally built for light and dark modes of view. When something is added, it will adjust contrast accordingly, unless you intentionally add something without contrast (for example, I add a white box at the end on the white background intentionally).

@Marc I would like to move my current cloud community to the new 5 version, do you have an approx date where this can be done?

IPS in general does not give dates for releases.  However given that IPB5 is in beta now, it should not be too long.  I would expect end of the year or very early next personally.  There are three major US holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years) coming up and IPS generally (historically) does not do releases around those times as they don't want to deal with big problems during times when they are on reduced staff and trying to celebrate like the rest of us.

Not quite yet. But its getting there 🙂

In reality, it depends on the beta process. We still have a bit to go yet, but things are moving along at a nice speed now, and things are getting quite stable. But we're unable to provide specific dates as of yet. Please do feel free to have a play with a beta though, if  you want to get to grips with things in the meantime.
