Hi,

As above - is it possible to set "Follow Topic" on new posts to be on as default?

I would have thought that anybody starting a topic would naturally want to follow it anyway so kinda surprising it is not set to Follow already.

Is there a setting somewhere where I change this?

There is indeed. 

For the defaults for members

Go to Members->Member Settings->Notifications and edit the "Followed content" option. 

 

For individuals as a personal preference

Click your name->Account Settings->Notification Settings->Followed Content
