Understanding the Pages Database Relationship Field

I'm trying to understand how to correctly use the Database Relationship Field in an IPS pages database and greatly appreciate any help.

Basically, I've created two databases: stories and chapters. The story database contains the story genre/summary/etc. The chapters database contains the story's chapters.

When a user visits a story record, I'd like the chapters of the related story to appear as a list of clickable links (so the user can click on and read each chapter).

Is this possible with the pages app, or am I misunderstanding how the database relationship field works? If it is possible, could someone please walk me through how this is done?

Or if there's a better way to accomplish altogether?

You probably want to rather use categories and records to create this parent—child relationship. It has drawbacks as well, but much less than using a database relationship field. That doesn’t even have ordering for example and therefore probably rules out this approach.
