I was just messing with making the forums non readable for Guests. 

I was surprised to see this, instead of something telling them they need to sign up to view  XYZ.

Not locating something implies it doesn't exist, rather than you can't view this as a Guest. 

 

How, exactly, did you "make the forums non readable for Guests"?

It tried by removing permissions in an individual forum.

I also tried it by removing permissions for the whole category/container.

Both gave that message.
