Searching custom fields?

I've created a database and added some custom fields. However, there doesn't seem to be any way to search the fields, even in Advanced Search.

Is there something special I need to do to enable members to search by these fields?

It's been quite a while and still no answer on this, so I'm bumping it. Still need an answer for a project I'm working on.
