I believe in 3.4 we can allow user name and / or email address for log in.  How to I turn that on in 4.0?  I have a bunch of users that have symbols in their user names and they can't log in now.

Yes, thats possible:
ACP -> System -> Settings, LoginHandlers -> Standard - Click EDIT -> Choose what you want to allow... (I use Display Name or Email Adress)
