Post Editor Needs Improvement. Is IPS or Coders Up To Challenge?

Hello, I am new here. We just moved our community from Huddler over to IPS. Looking forward to meeting many fellow users.

One of the major downgrades we have experienced comes in the editor that is used to post to the forum.

It does not support proper formatting of anything that cut and pasted to it from an outside source.

Two examples...

1. We post movie studio press releases to our site. These press releases come in an email, and contain specific fonts. They also come with artwork/photos. Here is a perfect example of something we receive in email...

On Huddler, we were able to copy and paste that information into their editor and for the most part, it would retain all the proper fonts and (sometimes) post the image without having to manually upload it. On IPS, the fonts are not preserved, and all images have to be manually uploaded.

Here is another problem....

Below is a studio press release for the Blu-ray movie release of Earthquake. Notice how specific information is placed in columns....

If I attempt to copy and paste that information into the editor, IPS will not preserve the columns of information. Instead it will take all that information and place it atop each other. It looks like a real mess when finished.

Now I am certainly not here to praise Huddler. I am much happier here on IPS than I am there. It's just that Huddler managed to create a feature-rich editor that properly handled specifically formatted information that could simply be copied and pasted from source to their editor and have everything preserved.

Is there hope that IPS can improve upon their editor, or someone can create a plug-in that can improve upon the editor?

For the first issue you outlined, where are you copying the data from? I believe this issue was addressed in 3.4.4, which we are currently beta testing on these forums. You may want to try posting one of the release notices here to see if the issue persists. If not, then when 3.4.4 is released, that will be all taken care of: http://community.invisionpower.com/forum/15-test-posting-messages/

If you do continue to notice trouble, please submit a bug report with details and we'll be happy to investigate.

Regarding the second issue - I expect that the remote data source is using tables to line up the data, which our parsing routines currently strip out. Unfortunately, there is no built in option to preserve these tables. You could post the announcements as raw HTML, which would allow you to post <table> HTML tags, as a possible alternative.

In 4.0, we will be reworking the editor and posting process from the ground up, and it is probable this sort of issue will no longer occur at that point in time.

This is potentially fantastic news.

If one could essentially cut and paste anything into the editor and have it preserved, that would be the answer to all prayers.

It's nearly being done now on Huddler. It's a shame it's one of the few things those guys got right. I see a lot more advancement here on IPS and a better understanding of how to make tools available to owners and members to make their online experience easier.
