Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
nes718 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 So I'm not sure how far, if ever, we're away from IPB having some kind of CMS system but in the intern, I was checking my board and see the portal has nearly the functionality of a CMS front page. What can be done to make it better function is having pagination at the bottom of the articles/posts where say <- 1 2 3 -> number '1' is the first page and '2' is the second listing of posts and so on. Also manual page breaks like drupal in the posts to tell the post only to display up until the <!--page--> break. This of course wouldn't be visible on the post when viewing the thread. What do you guys think????
Mr. Despair Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Yep, I think it's a good idea too. It doesn't look too good when you have a topic that is too long and I don't always want to show embedded media clips on the front page.
Rikki Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 We actually do have a CMS-like product, called IP.Content :) https://www.invisionpower.com/products/content/
nes718 Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 I have IP.Content but don't use it. I would if there were a ready made template like I'm describing. Too much of a learning curve and too many factors to worry about. Right now, the way I'm using my portal is pretty effective but would be 100x better with the two simple features. Basically, the portal is a pretty decent CMS front end already built. LOL! I think I'd rather modify it myself rather than trying to go the IP.Content rout. And don't get me wrong, I think IP.Content is a great product just that it's more oriented to building a web app rather than a simple CMS front end that is already party built as the portal currently is. We actually do have a CMS-like product, called IP.Content :) https://www.invision...oducts/content/
bfarber Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I don't know that we would want to make our portal more like a CMS when we already have a CMS product available. If anything, these suggestions would be better suited for our existing CMS product.

If anything, these suggestions would be better suited for our existing CMS product. The use of <!--page--> would probably be more suited for a CMS, but how about an option for simply truncating the topic at XX characters. And if the character count of the post is more than the limit, it'll be truncated and a "read more..." would be added.
nes718 Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 Are you referring to IP.Content? Or is there a CMS in the works? I recall a thread about that last year and that would be great if so. If IP.Content are there any third party templates with that functionality? From the default templates that come with IP.Content none have a blog face or a portal like listing of topics with pagination on the bottom of the listing. I'm also seriously looking as setting up the blog as the default homepage because it does have this capability but it just seems a bit too busy and I don't like how the images are handled. The portal though would be a perfect alternative with the list of pages at the bottom and some sort of page break mechanism. I'd be an even happier camper I don't know that we would want to make our portal more like a CMS when we already have a CMS product available. If anything, these suggestions would be better suited for our existing CMS product.
nes718 Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 This is definitely worth considering but what if at a certain number of characters you have some <html> tag and the truncating mechanism breaks it? I guess they can write a conditional to prevent this but it would probably be far easier to simply tell the portal the point you want to stop the display and ignore the rest of the post. I also believe Drupal has both a character limit and manual page breaks for their display, btw. The use of <!--page--> would probably be more suited for a CMS, but how about an option for simply truncating the topic at XX characters. And if the character count of the post is more than the limit, it'll be truncated and a "read more..." would be added.

I was going by IP.Content version 1 and just installed 2 and see all the new features Will take a little time to get it straigtend out but this definitely looks 1000x better over version 1
