Ditchmonkey Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 It appears that you are letting people remote link avatars with no restrictions. I have seen one that is over 1mb in size. This really kills the page load times here.
Randy Calvert Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 How can you control the file size of an image hosted on a remote server? The software does not control it in any way and cannot know it's size until called. Even if we were to say when the user submits the image link.... and IPB checked it to make sure it was below some threshold, what's to stop that image from being changed (since it's on a remote server which the board has no control over)? The only way to prevent this is to disable remote linking entirely (which is just a setting change).
Ditchmonkey Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 If allowing remote linked avatars results in the ability to abuse that feature, then it should be disabled, yes.
Brandon D Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I haven't seen abuse of it. The solution is to remove the avatars of those abusing it, not disable the entire feature for everyone.
bfarber Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 IPB allows you to disable remotely linked avatars, if it's an issue on your site. If you find an avatar image that is excessive, inappropriate, etc., report the user profile and we'll address it.
