Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Rοb Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Hello, Firstly, apologies in advance if there is a similar thread regarding this query, i have done a basic search but didn't see anything. I was made aware of IPS dropping the "Purchase Paid Subscriptions" feature (or at least not upgrading it i think) for version 3.0 because of IP.Nexus, however since that product now appears to have been put on the back burner i am interested to know the status of this feature for future versions. This feature is an integral part of my site/community, so I'd need to know if it is likely to be developed further or whether i would be best advised to look into third party billing software. Thanks :)
Mark H. Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 The Subscription Manager will be made into a Community Project. IPS has stated they will fix existing bugs, release it with 3.0, and then turn further development over to the Modding community. I, too, am waiting to see what becomes of it. There's a fair bit of potential in it.

There's a fair bit of potential in it. As you said, there's a ton of potential with the subscription manager. We simply don't have as many resources to devote to it (due to the actual usage and necessity of our subscription manager for our customers as a whole) as I believe some developers working on it via a community project will. I expect a lot of new functionality and features once this change is made.
W13 Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 WHOW !! Hold on a minute, when I upgrade to IPB 3, will the subscriptions be upgraded too? :-O Cause, I'm using it heavily now, and if anything goes wrong, or if this feature isn't in IPB 3 then... there'll be some major problems (many ppl have paid a year up-front, etc.) So please just clarify in layman's terms. IPB 3 will have the subscriptions stuff?
Mark H. Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Yes, it will, with known bugs from the existing version fixed. Then the Mod community will be loosed upon it. ;) I can't imagine that the upgrade would break existing subscriptions. That would make a lot of people very angry....

Okay, cause after I read what you typed I got a mental adrenaline rush and things sorta went blurry and zoomed out...I was made aware of IPS dropping the "Purchase Paid Subscriptions" feature
Luke Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 The subscription manager, logically, will be separated into a component, correct? I know Nexus is a bit farther out, but will there still be an option to integrate Nexus as a billing solution in place of the subscription manager?
Mark H. Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 That's a good question. I'm assuming (and I know the dangers of doing THAT, lol) they will do whatever it takes to make the existing Subscription Manager, minus known bugs they will fix, work well with IPB 3.0 and yet be fully compliant with the new way of doing things. I don't yet understand how 3.0's Component architecture will work. But I'm very much looking forward to finding out!
bfarber Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 The subscription manager will be updated to work with 3, as already stated. And then it will be turned into a community project where we hope it will get the attention it deserves.
Rοb Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I'd rather see it as a fully developed IPS (paid) component as it is of such high importance (I have hundreds of paid subscribers), but I accept many will not even use the feature in the first place. Thanks for the replies, I'll likely wait for 3.0 to arrive and see what the initial feature-list is before making a full decision, however.. The sooner this becomes a community project the better I feel, I don't know if this is planned but assembling the team to manage/run it and adding the relevant forum areas before 3.0 is out would be ideal. That way customer ideas, suggestions and general feedback on how/where we feel the project [c?sh]ould go can all be discussed in depth in the meantime and it'd be a good head start.

Now I'm just hoping someone is able to incorperate the "google checkout" module somehow. That is becoming more and more popular. :)

W13 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I'm looking forward to alternate methods like some pay-by-phone, pay-by-sms ( http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=269593 ) service, etc.
