Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Wondering Soul Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 I looked back like 6 pages to see if this had already been posted but I couldn't find anything so...basically, before the switch over from IPS Beyond, there used to be an IP.Board Version profile field. This was very helpful to people who were trying to help out as they knew which version the person asking for help was using! This was removed when IPS Beyond merged into these forums and I personally think that it would be a good idea to add it again. There have been quite a few occasions that I have seen here when people have asked for help and received an answer from someone only to find out that they are both using totally different board versions! Well I think it would be a good addition here anyways... What you guys think?
AndyF Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 +1 But... I seem to remember not that many people kept it up to date  , I can remember quite a few times I would of typed a detailed reply to someone's issue (and for example their version said 2.1.x) and then they would reply saying it did not work etc. Further posts showed they were using a later (2.2.x or so) version and had not updated the field :D At the moment, I just assume that they are using the latest version, unless they say otherwise :)
Wondering Soul Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Yea good point! People never used to keep them updated much...maybe its just better to assume that they have the latest version then :)
AndyF Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Oh, I do like the idea, but it's not that helpful if they are not up to date that's all :)
Axel Wers Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 there used to be an IP.Board Version profile field. Fields for ICB and IPG could be usefull too :P
Lindsey_ Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Fields for ICB and IPG could be usefull too :P +1 not a bad idea :)
elzaeed Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 It's a good idea, but with access to the support forums only being for people with "support contracts," their installation would, in the main, be at least no more than 6 months old. Although there could be some who pay the renewal fee, yet don't update, but I believe they won't be a significant minority at all. But what do I know, I could well be wrong. Kind regards
Wondering Soul Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Good point! As most people would have the latest version this could be a little pointless...would be helpful if people stated otherwise though if they didn't have the latest :)
Dlf Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 May or may not be possible (not much of a coder) . . . but couldn't you all (IPS) code some sort of interactive profile field that is linked to the users board version? I think somewhat like converge is for the longin system, except for a profile field here on this site. When the users board updates, the profile field here updates (automatically?), and disappears when they are changed to a normal user and can no longer see the support forum. Would that be possible at all?
Mat Barrie Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 I don't think so dlf, IPS doesn't actually keep track of what version of the board you use - the only time they ever find out what version is when your board's ACP checks for an update (the "IP.Board Up-to-date" image), and even then it doesn't necessarily know what user owns the board that's calling in.
