I think if they log in as hidden, the forum will not show them as signing in. Beside IPS would have flushed the account for being idle thinking it was a spammer or something.

So you're not actually asking if you can change your display name, you're asking if you can have an old member's name?

I'm sure if IPS start deleting people's accounts, no matter how old they are, somebody somewhere will get annoyed.

I believe our current setting is once every 30 days, which we think is adequate. Last time we allowed more, people were changing their names constantly which makes it very difficult to keep up. Also, we don't delete old accounts to enable people to take the username, unfortunately it's a first-come first-gets system :)
